Student Zone - Advice By Peter Mayhew

As a student myself, I can understand the workload and pressures when furthering your education.

However, the rewards far our weigh the cons!

Here are some tips on being a student.

Financial Tips

  1. Look around at banks that offer perks when you open a new account.

  2. Visit your local Health Centre or Doctors and pick up free condoms. Don't forget to use them!!

  3. Register for a Student NUS card. Your be entitled for many offers available in shops. Look at our discount page for more details.

  4. Always ask in High Street Stores, Taxis, Cinemas, Theatres, Fast Food stores, in fact anywhere if they offer student discount.

  5. Collect coupons, and use them!

  6. Shop around at different supermarkets to find all the deals, buy one get one free etc.

  7. When possible walk, or use your bicycle.

  8. Visit your friends when they are about to eat. Your most probably get fed as well.

  9. Give up smoking.

  10. When shopping, consider buying the supermarkets own brand product. You can normally save a considerable amount. However this isn't recommended when buying products like meat. In this case, its better to pay that extra. Example is with mince meat, the own brand will have a lot more fat contents, and a lot of off cuts.

  11. Check the price of books and equipment online before buying. Your be surprised how much the prices vary. Try www.bookbrain.co.uk and www.kelkoo.co.uk

  12. Put any savings into a high investment account.

  13. Try to work out a monthly budget for outgoing, and keep to it!

  14. If you travel by Train, get a Young Persons Rail card. You can make a large saving on the trips to college/uni.

  15. Apply for your student loan as early as possible and try to have it put into your account in three installments throughout the year.

  16. If you own a car, phone up several company's for insurance quotes, and do this each year. Don't assume because the insurance company your with this year is the cheapest, that next year it will still be the cheapest. Chances are, it will not be.

  17. Live with your parents/family as long as possible, its far cheaper that way. Trust me....
